Satoshi Maeda Satoshi Maeda
Ambassador of Japan to the State of Qatar
I arrived in Doha in October 2021. Qatar has received a great deal of attention thanks to the role it played in the evacuations from Afghanistan and has greatly enhanced its presence in the international community. On the start of my assignment in Qatar amidst all that, I was being reminded once more of the scale of my mission as an ambassador.
Needless to say, Qatar is an extremely important country for Japan as a supplier of Natural Gas and oil. In particular, its stable and flexible LNG supply capacity is indispensable for Japan's energy security.
In addition to its energy-related infrastructure, Qatar itself is also vigorously working to develop domestic infrastructure, including Doha Metro, with a view to hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2022 next year. It is a country that is experiencing a rapid growth.
Japan has been deeply involved in the development and progressing of these infrastructures thanks to the efforts of each and every company operating in Qatar and other relevant parties, and thus, I would like to express my deep respect to all of them.
On the other hand, as the international community undergoes major changes, such as the globalization, the shifting balance of power, the digital technology innovations and the environmental problems, both Japan and Qatar must tackle various challenges in order to adapt to all of that. Through such efforts by our two countries, I believe that the Japan-Qatar relations have come to a point where both countries can build new strategic relationship beyond the energy security. Such tendency was also reflected in the visit of Foreign Minister MOTEGI to Qatar in August of this year, where he held the first Japan-Qatar Strategic Dialogue with H.E. the Foreign Minister Sheikh Muhammad Al-Thani.
Qatar is also successfully controlling the spread of the coronavirus through vaccinations, etc., and the diplomatic activities, sports and human exchanges are gradually becoming more active. A grand cultural event is also scheduled early next year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. I feel extremely fortunate that I was able to assume this ambassadorship at a time when such a positive approach is coming true.
Lastly, I intend to continue to make my utmost efforts to further expand and develop Japan-Qatar's rich future and bilateral relations while listening to the experiences of the Japanese residents living in Qatar and the many other people involved in Japan-Qatar relations.
I look forward to meeting you at various opportunities.

Thank you.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Qatar
